I have always wanted white kitchen cabinets but I must say that with this project I almost bit off more than I could chew. Even though I thought at times that I would never finish, I am very happy with the results.
This photo shows you how painting my cabinets white made my fridge look yellow. What a bummer! Since there is no budget for a new fridge right now I am thinking about looking into appliance paint.
I don't have real good before pictures but here is a picture during the whole process. You can see that not only did I paint the cabinets but we also put in a new microwave.
I first sanded the cabinets then put a coat of primer on then two to three coats of paint. After the paint had dried for 48-72 hours I would lightly sand and then apply finishing wax. This last step made all the difference. The finishing wax made the paint job look so much better as well as add some protection to the cabinets since kitchen cabinets get so much abuse.
Here is the paint and finishing wax I used. The paint is from Lowe's and the color I used is called Dove White.
Thanks for stopping by for a visit. I hope that if you have been thinking about painting your kitchen cabinets that this will inspire you to do so. It is so worth it. I feel like I have a brand new kitchen!

ReplyDeleteHi, I'm visiting from Brenda's Cozy Little House! Are you kidding me, your kitchen is gorgeous!!! Honestly, if I keep seeing re-dos like yours, I'm going to have to get brave and do mine - thanks for sharing the inspiration. Stop by to visit me anytime, we recently built a kitchen island that we're in love with - from an old desk we found at the dump :)

I LOVE white cabinets! Your kitchen is so lovely! I painted mine also. I wish I had thought of the wax step because you are so right about the beating they take from use. I think the appliance paint sounds like a good idea. What number grit of sandpaper did you use before the wax?
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm visiting from Cozy Little House! I love what you did with your cabinets...big job but so worth it! We recently did white open shelving in our kitchen so I know how big these projects can be! But I love it! I love your counter tops, are they new, too? Great job!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Janie
You did a great job on your cabinets! We completely redid our kitchen this summer with new everything (except fridge and stove) as our cabinets were to icky to paint. I love a white kitchen. It's so much brighter! Pamela
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen looks perfect!! I love white kitchen cupboards too as you can tell by my kitchen redo!!
ReplyDeleteGreat job!! I am so impressed. Your cabinets look fantastic!

ReplyDeleteWhat do you think of the minwax wax? I have used Annie Sloan but it is so expensive. I tried Trewax and I didn't care for it.

What a wonderful improvement! Yea, YOU! That had to be a difficult & time consuming job but it was soooo worth it.
ReplyDeleteI just googled "car paint for appliances". See what you find out under that subject. There are spray paints for such items but the fumes are bad. We knew of friends who had an auto body shop repaint their refrigerator but that can't be too cheap. Good Luck!
What a great lay-out and cabinets to start with! Your title is how I am feeling at the moment ~ we are downsizing and I am finally getting white kitchen cabinets. I'm very excited that our new place already has lots of white going on {I've lived with oak long enough!}. I love your white accessories, too, I'm looking forward to setting mine up as well. Enjoy them!
ReplyDeleteWonderful transformation! I'm sure your kitchen is brighter and lighter. Maybe you will get used to the off white frig eventually --or bring in some other off white somewhere. I have heard appliance paint has improved.
ReplyDeleteHello...
ReplyDeleteWow...what a fabulous transformation, my friend! I love your white cabinets and how they have opened up your kitchen! I'm sooo very happy for you! That was quite a job, I'm sure...but they turned out beautiful!!! Love, love, LOVE your white ironstone pitchers up on the top of the cabinets! You're a gal after my own heart! Hehe! Thanks for sharing your new white beauties with us!

ReplyDeleteGreat job! You cannot beat a fresh coat of white paint on just about anything. Very nice.
ReplyDeleteRene
White is one of the best color for the cabinets. You got a good color for you own cabinets and it is very cool to look. Cabinetry Ventura also you can find some of your favorites Cabinet Items.
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen looks great! I have been wanting to paint my cabinets white for some time but I've been a little nervous. Thanks for the inspiration. Love your blog. Dena
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to collect pitchers to display them like yours! Your kitchen is lovely!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on painting your cabinets! Glad I read this posting. I'm in the process of painting my kitchen table and chairs. I painted the table white and the Windsor chairs black! I used Lowes Valspar satin paint.
ReplyDeleteSo you think using the finishing wax made all the difference? Do you think I should use this on my table and chairs? My dining set needs all the protection it can get.
Did you end up painting your fridge with appliance paint?
Love your blog!
~Sandy
I love the result of your paint job with your cabinets. Can you tell how long this took you?
